Early 1900s
Seratoff and Sons
Abraham Seratoff emigrated from Russia to New York’s lower east side where he started a scrap metal business called Seratoff and Sons. He salvaged anything from tires to doorknobs.
1945
Incorporated Sabin Metal
Abraham’s son Samuel and his business partner Ben combined their names to form Saben Metal. With the name Saben already taken, they incorporated as Sabin Metal. The business took off, inspiring Samuel to change the family name to Sabin.
1957
Introduction into Precious Metals
The U.S. Department of Defense hired Sabin Metal to recover the precious metals in their silver zinc batteries. Sabin soon became the DoD’s largest recycler of precious metals.
1969
Expansion into Platinum Group Metals (PGMs)
Samuel’s son Andy made a name for himself by orchestrating the company’s first PGM deal. That client is still a loyal Sabin Metal customer to this day.
1975
Opening of Main Plant Scottsville Facility
Sabin Metal purchased a former gypsum mining facility and repurposed it to process scrap precious metal-bearing materials.
1980
Leading Electronic Scrap Recycling
Andrew Sabin assumes the president’s role after the passing of his father Samuel. By this time, Sabin Metal has become one of the world’s largest recyclers of precious metals from electronic scrap material.
1995
A New Vision
Electronics manufacturers began swapping precious metals for base metals and offshoring production. Andrew Sabin and his management team had the foresight to diversify and develop the technology to process industrial catalysts.
1998
Opening the McAlpine Mill. Closing the loop
Sabin purchased the Canadian mill site to handle secondary processing of slag. Our goal was to fully close the precious metals loop and recover every possible ounce of metal.
2001
Firing up the strategy with the Williston Plant
With the change in business strategy towards industrial catalysts, Sabin Metal acquired a base metal catalyst facility and adapted their electric arc furnace technology to process precious metal bearing catalysts.
2008
Andrew Sabin Family Foundation
To help make a lasting difference in society, Chairman of the board Andrew Sabin and his family started the foundation to focus on environmental, human health, and local community causes.
2015
Four Generations of Sabins
Jonathan Sabin became president of Sabin Metal, adding another generation of Sabin leadership to the company. This announcement aligned with the 70th Anniversary of the company’s founding.
2020 and beyond
Adapting to new industry needs
In the face of new industry challenges and opportunities, Sabin expanded the kilning capacity in our Sabin Metal West plant and increased the refining capacity of our Main Plant.
