Steve Helm was born and raised in southwestern Pennsylvania. He graduated from Geneva College, Beaver Falls, PA, in 1974 with a B. S. in Chemistry (ACS certified degree) and specialization in organic chemistry. Following college, Steve worked as a metallurgist in the brass and bronze industry, serving as assistant plant manager, and later plant manager.
In March 1981, he joined Sabin Metal Corp in Rochester, New York. While managing the High Grade Processing and Sampling operations, Steve continued his education studying sampling theory and sampling practice under Francis Pitard and Jan Merks, two noted experts in the field. During his time in Rochester, Steve served as a main plant operations Supervisor, Manager of High Grade Sampling and Processing operations, and later as Commercial Manager.
In 2000, Sabin Metal Corp. purchased the ceramic supported catalyst processing facility in Williston, North Dakota that is now known as Sabin Metal West Corp. Steve relocated to ND, where he was responsible for plant start up and operations. Steve and his family remained in ND, and he is the Vice President and General Manager of Sabin Metal West Corp.
Steve has presided as Chairman of the Sampling and Analytical Council of the International Precious Metals Institute (IPMI) since 2010.
Married since 1974, Steve and his wife have 3 children.
